HBTS: February Desk Work

Writer: Michelle Emick RonholmMichelle Emick Ronholm

Sh*t got done in February. Let's talk about it.

History

I was able to make some steady progress on editing the book. To be honest, it's feeling like a bit of a slog right now, which I'm told is totally normal at this point. And like most writers, there are days when I think the work is good and days I think I should delete all the files. I'm still enjoying the process, slog and all, so much so that I think my next video will be about my writing process.

I finally got the Stamp Act protest content up. I don't know why that took so freakin' long, but I'm glad it's up. There's so much history goodness around the Stamp Act it was hard to narrow down to something workable. I ended up focusing on Zachariah Hood and the violence that erupted in Annapolis at the time. Here's the video. Here's the blog post. Here's the creative

I finished reading Blood and Roses: One Family's Struggle and Triumph During the Tumultuous Wars of the Roses, by Helen Castor. The Paston family left a treasure trove of letters that not only capture the big events of 100 years of English history, but also provide a fantastic look at day-to-day life in medieval England. (From the perspective of a reasonably hoity-toity family.) The history of the letters themselves is fascinating.

Training

Weights were moving nicely in February and I upped my running game. I'm toying with the idea of running a 5k. We'll see. I'm finally getting used to my new skate blades. Most things forward are fine, crossovers notwithstanding. Backward is still a little unsteady but it feels good not to have toepicks scraping all the time.

Music Studies

I finally scheduled a lesson with my flute teacher and she was a game-changer. I spent months struggling with some small-but-crucial concepts, and in 30 minutes she helped me untangle all of it. She also had me start working on some music theory, which is proving much needed context to my studies and expanding my music vocabulary. It feels so good to be unstuck and enthusiastic about my instrument again. I'm committed to regular lessons going forward.

Heading into March

That's February in a nutshell. It wasn't terribly video-genic, but it was remarkably productive. I have some travel plans in March and an intention to continue to have fun with the book even as I struggle through the rough parts. Good things ahead...
